What is Chiropractic?
By Jim Martinez
Chiropractic is a science, art, and philosophy of healing that has been around for over 100 years. In fact, it is the fastest growing health care profession in the world. In the 20th century, this time tested practice has gained respect as a safe, drug free and natural treatment for headaches, joint pain, spinal disc conditions and strains, sprains and other injuries. Chiropractic can also offer significant relief for allergies, asthma, and digestive problems and other disorders.
Chiropractic deals with the realignment of the structural framework of the human body-mainly the nervous, muscular and skeletal system. It recognizes that all functions within the body are controlled by the nervous system. When the nerve is impinged, and imbalance of nerve impulses to the destined body part occurs. If it is a nerve that innervates (supplies) a muscle, spasms and pain can result. If it is a nerve that innervates an organ such as the liver, the ability of the organ to do its job is diminished. If the nerve is innervating a portion of the skin controlling our ability to sense touch, tingling or paresthesia can occur.
All of the nerves below the head pass through the spinal column first. If one or more of spinal vertebrae (the bones that make up your backbone) are not functioning properly, this could cause compression of the nerves running through that particular vertebrae. Compression, ever so slight, can interrupt destination, resulting in altered function. A chiropractor will correct these imbalances by freeing up vertebrae so that proper function will return.
Chiropractic comes from the Greek word chiropraktikos meaning effective treatment by hand. By gently manipulating misaligned vertebrae pressure is released on joints and nerves and muscular tension is relieved.
Headaches are by far the number one health complaint in America. Muscle tension stress headaches make up 90% of all headaches Vertebrogenic headaches are caused by problems in the neck. The ache in headache does not come form the brain—your brain can feel no sensation. What puts the “ache” in your headache? Veins and arteries inside the brain and skull, membranes that wrap around the brain, and certain nerves, in the head called cranial nerves. When these are pulled, stretches, compressed, irritated, inflamed, or infected headaches often result. For over a 100 years chiropractors has observed an intimate relationship between the spine and headaches. Many headache and migraine patients have claimed relief with chiropractic care. So if you suffer from headaches, make sure your spine is healthy..see your chiropractor.
Lower back pain is one the most common complaints of Americans. In fact, it is estimated that at lease eight out of ten people will experience lower back pain at some point in their loves, with more than 95% having the problem more than once.
While most episodes of back pain resolve in a couple of weeks, some people have persistent pain than can become disabling and others have bout after bout of back pain. Chiropractors have helped millions of people with lower back problems, often saving them from pain, disability, drugs, and surgery. Regular chiropractic care may make the difference between a lifetime of comfort or a lifetime of pain. Consequently, chiropractic is dedicated to the manipulation of our spines to both correct misalignments and to remove interference within our central nervous systems. Following chiropractic adjustments, our nervous systems can then function properly and allow our bodies to self regulate naturally.
