Pregnancy and Your Oral Health

If you’re expecting a little bundle of joy, cheap dental insurance probably isn’t the first thing on your mind, but maybe it should be. Not many people realize it, but during your pregnancy you should be taking extra good care of your pearly whites and gums. You should also keep in mind that you are about to have an extra little mouth to think about; so early on in the pregnancy wouldn’t be the worst time to look into affordable dental plans for your family.

The following are a few tips for keeping your oral hygiene in tip-top condition throughout your pregnancy:

Don’t shy away from your dentist: Regular dental care during your pregnancy is not only ok—it’s encouraged. While it’s true you should avoid X-rays and elective dental surgery if possible, your regular cleanings are even more important during pregnancy. Just be sure to tell your dental office that you are pregnant and when your due date is.

Keep up your brushing and flossing routine: Continue to brush 2-3 times per day with fluoridated toothpaste and make sure you are still flossing once a day as well.

Be aware of the risks: The increase of hormones that comes along with pregnancy puts you at greater risk for gingivitis; this is sometimes known at “pregnancy gingivitis.” If gingivitis is left untreated it can lead to more serious periodontal gum disease, which has the potential to lead to tooth loss. This is why it is extra important to stick to your oral health routine and regular dental visits.

Eat healthy foods: As I am sure you already know, it is important to fuel your body—as well as the child’s body that is growing inside you—with healthy foods. But healthy eating is also good for your teeth. Choose foods low in sugar and be sure you’re eating a wide variety of those healthy foods.
